Meet: Eli Feldman, Partner at Shy Bird
Our team enjoyed chatting with Eli Feldman, partner at Shy Bird, to learn more about this fast-growing neighborhood spot. Eli and his long-time collaborator Andrew opened Shy Bird Kendall Square in August 2019. The two met while studying at Boston University’s Hospitality School and later honed their skills in Boston’s fine dining scene. Their first joint venture was Branch Line in Watertown in 2015, where the seeds of Shy Bird, and its focus on rotisserie, were planted. Eli explained, “We wanted to create an approachable and affordable neighborhood spot where people could enjoy great food multiple times a week—whether dining in or grabbing takeout.”
Shy Bird has since expanded to South Boston, opening the location on Old Colony Ave. in December 2022. Eli and Andrew have plans to open a third location in Fenway this winter. The Shy Bird concept has resonated with locals looking for a go-to spot that blends warm hospitality, great food, and a welcoming atmosphere. The name “Shy Bird” refers to the wild junglefowl, the ancestors of modern-day chickens, which are naturally shy compared to their domesticated counterparts—a clever nod to the restaurant’s humble yet thoughtful approach.
As managing partner, Eli is hands-on with the day-to-day operations. “I’m in the restaurants daily, doing everything from bussing tables to financial meetings,” Eli shared. This hands-on approach ensures that the quality and spirit of Shy Bird are maintained across all locations.
The community has embraced the South Boston location, and Shy Bird has quickly become a valued member of the neighborhood. They’ve collaborated with local businesses like Love Child, B/Spoke, and Rock Spot, contributing to the tight-knit network of Southie retailers. Eli remarked, “The neighborhood has been so supportive—guests and other retail neighbors. It’s just an awesome community to be a part of.”
Eli and Andrew chose this neighborhood because they saw the opportunity to add something new to the area. “Southie has an incredible restaurant culture, but the Dot/Old Colony area felt earlier in its evolution to where an all-day spot like Shy Bird could really be embraced,” Eli explained. Looking ahead, Eli believes South Boston’s future is bright, with new developments like South Standard and Trimount Condos contributing to a revitalized neighborhood. Shy Bird is excited to be part of this growth and evolution.
When asked to describe South Boston in one word, Eli didn’t hesitate: “Supportive.” This reflects both the neighborhood’s energy and Shy Bird’s place within it—a restaurant that’s truly embraced by the community it serves. Be sure to check them out by booking a reservation on their website or ordering takeout for a night in! Check out Eli’s full interview video below.
